Goddess of Weaving
In the Navajo tradition, Spiderwoman lived on an 800 foot tall rock in Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. She taught them to build their looms and weave their beautiful blankets. When Navajo boy was running away from an enemy and running deeper into the canyon, spider woman sent down a silken rope that he tied around his waist so he could scale up the steep rock. He found eagles eggs and morning dew for nourishment. When it was safe she showed him how to use the rope to lower himself and return to his home. Spider woman is the Goddess of weavers.
In the Greek tradition, Arachne was a beautiful woman who boasted of her great weaving skills. The Goddess Athena heard of these boasts and challenged her to a contest. Arachne wove a tapestry that was not only more beautiful that Athena's but also told the stories of Zeus's seductions of mortal women. Athena punished Arachne by turning her into an eight-legged spider that must continuously weave without a loom. Don't piss off Athena.
